Fear of Heights
Our natural fear responses can become exaggerated by the subconscious mind even though we know realistically you know if you are careful when climbing a ladder or walking across a footbridge you’ll be fine if you are careful, our bodies can respond to our subconscious telling us there is more of a threat than there actually is.
This exaggerated response can develop from past experience or a story you have been told by others. We learn through experience and we can unlearn it. Therapy can help you deal with your fear of heights by training your subconscious to react in a calmer manner.
A fear of heights is actually useful. If you are standing, say on the edge of a cliff, your natural fear response will let your body know that you should not get too close to the edge. This is a fight or flight instinct and is natural to help keep you safe.
