As with many fears and phobias it is an exaggerated response to a natural instinct. Fear of insects and spiders is common. Especially if you do not know if what you are faced with is potentially dangerous to you.
Your subconscious mind can exaggerate these natural responses that you would expect to feel with a large tarantula so that even a small house spider that is most likely far more scared of you than you are of it. Looking at the situation objectively you would know this, however that is not always possible when our natural instincts are exaggerated.
