Fear of the Dentist
Fear of the dentist and dental treatment is very common but not many people like to talk about it.
There are various levels of dental phobia, as it’s known, and can grow to a level severe enough for a person to avoid going to the dentist unless they are in severe pain. This can cause further problems where more treatment will be required than if they had gone to regular check ups. The associations made when visiting the dentist especially when in pain can make us always associate the dentist with pain and fear which continues the cycle.
As with many fears and phobias, a fear of the dentist can come from a past unpleasant experience. You can feel out of control and even trapped in the dentists chair. The fear can be associated with not being able to see whats going on and not knowing what is happening next. You can be worried about being told off also.
What ever causes the fear it is the subconscious response that we have learned. This is either directly from your own experience or from the stories of others. The more you allow this fear to control your decision to visit the dentist the more this reinforced. Therapy can help you deal with your fear by re-training your subconscious.
Which type of therapy is suitable for Fear of the Dentist?
